As a main attraction in the Berkshires, Tanglewood boasts an array of cultural performances. It has been the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra since 1937 but besides classical performances, Tanglewood hosts the Festival of Contemporary Music, jazz and popular artists, concerts. That said, our list of not to miss performances are as follows:
YoYo Ma- This cello legend graces Tanglewood at least once a summer, typically in August. He also lives in the Berkshires, so it is not unusual for him to pop in as a surprise act during another performance.
John Williams, Film Night - Each summer we have the epic opportunity to hear our favorite film scores conducted by the man himself. Sit under the stars as film clips are projected on the big screens and the sounds of the orchestra fill the vast grounds. John Williams has composed some of the most iconic films scores in history, including Star Wars, Home Alone, ET, Jaws, and Harry Potter. Legend has it the Harry Potter score was actually composed here in the Berkshires!
James Taylor- Bar none the biggest draw to Tanglewood, James Taylor is the only artist to actually sell out the lawn- so get your tickets well in advance! After a long history with the Berkshires (even mentioned in the lyrics of Sweet Baby James) James Taylor has also made it his home. Passionate local fandom means you'll find a great mix of locals and tourists alike at this July 4th staple event.
CHECK THE CALENDAR- The Tanglewood schedule is posted every November, but many popular artist events are added as late as June.
Don't forget about Ozawa Hall! If you're looking for a low-key and romantic way to spend your evening, check out the Tanglewood schedule and see what's happening at Ozawa hall. This architectural marvel is absolutely stunning to behold while listening to world-class musicians, especially from its lawn.
