Each day IS183 Art School instructor Kim Waterman will read a story together and show you how to create a piece of art inspired by that story!
Classes are for young artists age 4–5 and a caregiver.
MONDAY, JULY 20 — MAGIC FISH
Today we will listen to the old folktale "The Magic Fish" and create our own dazzling fish!
Materials: white poster board or paper, colored tissue paper or old magazines, paint, paintbrushes, glue, mixing cups (old yogurt containers work great!), scissors, and something to glue on for the eye (bottle cap, button, piece of paper cut into a circle. etc.) optional: glitter, hole puncher and yarn
TUESDAY, JULY 21 — ANANSI THE SPIDER
We will listen to the African folktale "Anansi the Spider" and create our own spider art!
Materials: black poster board or paper, scissors, colored construction paper or recycled papers, oil pastels or crayons, glue stick or any kind of glue, and a glitter, hole puncher, and yarn if you have it
WEDNESDAY, JULY 22 — PANDORA'S BOX
Today we will listen to the Max and Ruby version of "Pandora's Box" and create our own decorated treasure box!
Materials: any box (wood or cardboard, shoe box, small packing box, etc.) collage paper (any kind of paper, picture from a book, old magazine, wrapping paper, old cards, or print some pictures you like!), glue stick or any kind of glue, paint, brushes, mixing containers (old yogurt containers work great!), mod podge if you have it for a finishing coat (not necessary), jewels, buttons, etc. can be used for added embellishment
THURSDAY, JULY 23 — BABA YAGA FOLKTALE DRAWINGS
We will listen to a version of the old Baba Yaga witch folktale "Bony Legs" and illustrate your favorite scene. Perfect for those children who love to draw!
Materials: ideally oil pastels/crayons and watercolor paint (to create a watercolor resist!), but any drawing materials (markers, colored pencils, etc.) will work, too!
FRIDAY, JULY 24 — CIRCUS COLLAGE
Today we will listen to the festive and colorful book "Circus" and create a brightly colored collage!
Materials: black poster board or paper, brightly colored papers, scissors, glue stick or any kind of white glue
