Rob Fisch's Intentional Jazz celebrates "Kind of Blue"

Rob Fisch’s Intentional Jazz performing a celebration of music from Miles Davis’ classic “Kind of Blue”.

Kind of Blue was recorded in two sessions on March 2 and April 22 of 1959. The sessions included pianist Bill Evans, drummer Jimmy Cobb, bassist Paul Chambers, and saxophonists John Coltrane and Julian "Cannonball" Adderley, together with pianist Wynton Kelly on one track (Freddie Freeloader).

It was recorded at a time period in jazz like no other. Jazz artists representing very different genres were all regularly performing, including Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman, and Marian McPartland. Also in 1959, the boomers were booming, Rock & Rock was evolving, by then, three of “The Beatles” (John, Paul & George) were performing (as “Johnny and the Moondogs”), and the 1960s were about to unfold!

Kind of Blue became an instant classic. It is well regarded as the all-time best selling jazz recording ever. Several of the selections, such as All Blues and Blue in Green, are still commonly performed by jazz musicians everywhere. While the recorded performance was simply effervescent, perhaps the real genius behind these record dates was Miles Davis’s ability to engineer the convergence of the likes of Bill Evans, Jimmy Cobb, Paul Chambers, John Coltrane, Julian (“Cannonball”) Adderly, Wynton Kelly & (of course) Miles Davis.
