Berkshire AthenaeumIn recognition of Leonard Bernstein’s 100th birthday, WordXWord challenged poets to not ‘crash and Bernstein’ in response to the poetry used by the maestro in his American bicentennial tribute Songfest: A Cycle of American Poems. Participating poets were asked to create new work with prompts extracted from the poetry of the iconic American poets used by Bernstein for his libretto: Langston Hughes, June Jordan, e.e. cummings, Conrad Aiken, Frank O’Hara, Edna St. Vincent Milay, Edgar Alan Poe, Ann Bradstreet, Julia de Burgos, Gertrude Stein, Gregory Corso, and Lawrence Ferlenghetti.
