In his Light Paint series, Bill Wright has added light to otherwise dark environments and controlled the amount of time his subject was bathed in it, initially allowing the light to embed the subject into the image. Halfway through the exposure, he turned off his lamp just long enough for his subject to remove herself from the frame. Once clear, Wright switched the light on, which effectively permitted the lit setting to wash away (or erase) much of the figural imagery and seemingly give the objects and surfaces center stage. However, as the viewer continues their gaze, ghostly figures magically appear, leaving us to wonder how we ever missed them. This series was created at The Red Lion Inn in Stockbridge and an old abandoned mansion in the Southern Berkshires.
The Shower series is the artist’s visual diary, which captures early morning moments he and his wife take for themselves before their three children intervene and win their attention. Each image captures Bill’s love of his wife as well as his love of light. Their titles simply, yet intimately, denote the time of day each moment was recorded and savored.
The self-proclaimed “Chaser of Light” and his wife, Carrie, have called the Berkshires home for 15 years and are raising their children in Pittsfield, MA.
