For many, the Berkshires is a bucolic respite from the busyness of city life. Rest and relaxation is achieved by simply driving through the canopied roads of Stockbridge, or hiking the hundreds of trails reaching from north to south. It makes sense that the Berkshires is also home to a great many yoga studios, retreats, and world renowned instructors. With this guide we hope to help you navigate the many places to improve your practice in our area.

Kripalu Center for Yoga & Health
57 Interlaken Rd, Lenox, Massachusetts 01262Kripalu Yoga is a world renowned type of Hatha Yoga that just happens to be native to our beautiful Berkshire County. Its Stockbridge Center for Yoga and Health is one of North America’s largest residential facilities for holistic health and offers regular retreats year round.
Prospective guests can choose from hundreds of programs, trainings, and treatments designed to further their yoga practices and empower their minds. Kripalu also offers one day passes if committing to a full retreat is not for you. A day pass includes 3 meals at the Kripalu Kitchen where you can enjoy some of the most deliciously prepared vegan and vegetarian cuisine in our area. Expect a healing and spiritual practice with extra focus on connecting mind and body.

Insider Tip: On Saturday mornings in July & August Kripalu instructors make their way across the street to the beautiful Tanglewood campus. Yoga on the lawn at Tanglewood is your chance at a drop in class with Kripalu while listening to live classical music. Best part- the cost is only $13 at the Tanglewood gate, or available at no additional charge to Saturday-morning BSO Rehearsal ticket holders. Remember to bring your mat!

Lenox Yoga
4 Main Street, Lenox, Massachusetts 01240With a convenient downtown Lenox location and classes ranging in beginners to advanced levels, Lenox Yoga is one of our favorite places to chaturanga in all of Berkshire County. It’s founder, Sue Parsley, has taught in some of the more exclusive spas in the country, and her up to date and less “earthy crunchy” perspective has us all coming back week after week to practice. Situated in the gorgeous and historical Curtis building, this bright and spacious studio is the perfect place to start or end your vacation days in the Berkshires.
Classes at Lenox Yoga incorporate a number of styles and backgrounds of the practice and include Hatha, Kriya, Kripalu, Ashtanga, Power Yoga and even some Pilates Taiji influence, giving you one of the more well rounded studios you will find on this side of the state.

Insider Tip: We love all the classes at Lenox Yoga, but particularly the Wednesday night Vigorous Flow with owner, Sue. This is an hour long class beginning at 5:15 pm and is a local favorite because of its challenging yet playful vibe. Expect fun music and an encouraging atmosphere that typically involves clapping for one another and plenty of laughs, reminding us that we can’t take ourselves too seriously as we push past our comfort zones.

Lifeworks Studio
50 Castle Street, Great Barrington, Massachusetts 01230Situated in the picturesque downtown of Great Barrington, Lifeworks Studio has quickly become a popular spot among those who love a good yoga, barre or pilates class in the Berkshires. With a wide variety of body toning class options, you might find yourself dropping in for a yoga class and leaving after zumba. Lifeworks even offers private, prenatal and parent/toddler classes for those with specific yoga needs! This kid and mommy friendly studio embraces a sense of community and friendship even if your just dropping in while on vacation. Love to dance? Make sure to check out Belly Dance or Salsa sessions on Tuesday evenings!

Insider Tip: For those who like a fun and less traditional yoga practice, we highly recommend the Thursday 6 pm Hip-Hop Yoga class! Get your sweat on and try to fight the urge to break into dance while in your down dog. Should the rhythm get the best of you not to worry, it happens all the time!

Rhythms Center
55 Pittsfield Rd, Lenox, Massachusetts 01240If you are looking for a new spin (literally) on your daily yoga practice, we have just the class for you! Rhythms, located in Lenox, offers a twice weekly Cycling, Sculpting and Yoga class which combines 30 minutes of cardio on the bike, 30 minutes of muscle toning work using bands and weights, and last, but certainly not least, 30 minutes of deep and delicious yoga postures. This class is sure to leave you feeling toned, flexible, energized and ready to take on the day! These classes are available on Mondays and Fridays from 8:30 am to 10 am, getting you in, out and on your way to a leisurely lunch or shopping date downtown before the clock strikes noon!

Most class offerings incorporate a vinyasa based method of yoga at some capacity, so if you enjoy a flow style practice with a focus on breathing techniques and alignment, look no further than this local favorite. Expect relaxing music of the musical and/or chanting variety and a non-competitive, spiritual environment.
