    Winter means snowshoe, cross country ski, snowmobiles, and hunting. Winter hiking near Benedict Pond (Lake Benedict) and along the Appalachian Trail is a good choice but be aware that if the park gets snow, hikers share other parts of the state forest with non-hikers. Parking is free in the winter.

    The Clark’s campus is the ideal setting for a snowshoe adventure! Visit the equipment rack near the Manton Research Center and borrow a pair of snowshoes to discover the beauty of our campus in winter. Take pictures, share them with #clarkart, and leave us a note in the snowshoe journal (look inside the desk on the side of the rack) to tell us about your snow trek!

    Renowned for its Nordic skiing, Notchview also allows you to go off track and explore the backcountry or snowshoe alongside the ski trails.  In winter, warm up in the Budd Visitor Center, featuring a masonry heater with toasty soapstone seats, a waxing area, rental shop with both skis and snowshoes, and a stunning view of our woods and fields. Take an energy break with soup, sandwiches, baked goods, and beverages from our café. Along the trail, two Adirondack shelters offer skiers a chance to sit and admire the landscape. Public restrooms (open year-round). Seating area.

    October Mountain State Forest is a 16,460-acre forest and recreational preserve located primarily in the town of Washington with adjoining parcels in Becket, Lee, and Lenox.
