Special guest teachers Caleb Teicher and LaTasha Barnes kick off this exciting evening with an introduction to swing dance, then lead us into a social dance party accompanied by hard-swinging jazz band and local favorites, The Lucky 5. ABOUT CALEB TEICHER:
Caleb Teicher is a critically acclaimed dancer, choreographer, director, and teacher based in New York City. Teicher began his dance career as a founding member of Michelle Dorrance’s celebrated company Dorrance Dance in 2011. He was awarded a 2011 Bessie Award for Outstanding Individual Performance for his work in Michelle Dorrance and Dormeshia Sumbry-Edwards’ A Shared Evening at Danspace Project. Other favorite performance credits include The Chase Brock Experience, Syncopated City Dance Company, The Bang Group, Sally Silvers & Dancers, iLuminate, West Side Story (Int’l Tour and London), and Irma La Douce (City Center Encores).
ABOUT LATASHA BARNES:
LaTasha “Tasha” Barnes is an internationally acclaimed dancer, educator, and ambassador of culture. Celebrated for her musicality, athleticism, and joyful presence throughout all her dance
forms including house, hip-hop, waacking, vernacular jazz, lindy hop, and more. She earned the distinction of being the first U.S. and female team to win the Juste Debout World Championships for House Dance in 2011, and the U.S. Championship titles in 2011 and 2013 with her partner. Barnes expanded into jazz and lindy hop in 2013 and has been honored to serve as an Ambassador Scholar of the Frankie Manning Foundation from 2014 to present.
ABOUT THE LUCKY 5:
The Lucky 5 is a hard-swinging jazz band that blends swing and gypsy jazz to create a unique, foot-stomping blend of music that appeals to a wide range of music lovers, performing both original compositions as well as putting a new spin on old jazz standards. The band is comprised of highly seasoned touring musicians, having been part of The Hunger Mountain Boys, Lauren Ambrose & The Leisure Class, and traveled, performed, and recorded with artists such as Peter Gabriel, Tony Bennett, Neko Case, Iris Dement, Bobby Previte, Del McCoury, and Jim Lauderdale, just to name a few. The Lucky 5 brings verve, high energy, and an unpredictable impulse to the tradition of jazz from the '20s, '30s, and '40s, grooving deeply, and keeping feet moving on the dance floor.
