Prior to this, he starred in the West End production of Tammy Faye, a musical by Elton John, Jake Shears, and Rupert Goold. On the feature side, he can be seen in two films for Netflix – Ryan Murphy’s adaptation of the Tony-nominated musical The Prom (alongside a star-studded cast that includes Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman and James Corden) and the feature adaptation of The Boys in the Band, alongside the rest of his cast from the 2018 critically-acclaimed Broadway run. Perhaps best known for his role as “Elijah” on the hit HBO series Girls, Rannells has also appeared in season two of Steven Soderbergh’s The Knick on Cinemax and starred on NBC’s The New Normal. In addition to The Boys in the Band, Andrew’s other recent theatre credits include originating the role of “Elder Price” in The Book of Mormon (for which he won a Grammy Award and was nominated for both a Tony and a Drama Desk Award), “King George” in the smash hit Hamilton, starring as “Hedwig” in Hedwig and the Angry Inch, and the Broadway revival of Falsettos, for which he was nominated for a Tony Award. Andrew’s other film credits include the Fox feature Why Him alongside James Franco and Bryan Cranston, Paul Feig’s thriller A Simple Favor, opposite Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick and Nancy Meyer’s The Intern for Warner Bros.
He will next be seen starring alongside Nick Kroll in the recent SXSW debut film, I Don’t Understand You, and in Jim Rash’s Miss You, Love You opposite Allison Janney.
